York's Music Scene

York’s Music Scene

Although not attracting the biggest headline acts which cities like Leeds, Manchester and London enjoy – York’s music scene is very active and varied too.

For our ‘Resident’s Hat’ film feature this month, we speak with Paul Winn – not only a singer and harmonica player for local blues band, DC Blues, but he also actively promotes music being co-founder of York Blues Fest and a presenter on numerous local, specialist and community radio stations.

York’s Music Scene – view from a musician

Paul talks with clear passion about music and also reminisces about starting off in bands and playing the bars, pubs and clubs in and around the city. As a radio host and music presenter, Paul is keen to keep music live. His weekly radio show on Jorvik Radio has regular live musicians and he champions not only blues music, but local musicians too.

York Blues Festival

In 2019, Paul became a co-founder of York Blue’s Fest. A full day of live music held at The Crescent Community Venue in York. With hours of great live music, and a very reasonable door fee, the festival was a sell out and led to 2020’s event (sadly since postponed due to Coronavirus) being in a similar position with bands literally lining up to play.

The Connected-York App is great for finding out what gig is on now, and is helping people get their live music fix, and helping pubs and clubs get that all-important footfall in. We’re proud supporters of York Blues Fest and other music events, such as Apollo Music Fest.
